Wine Lovers

An evening of fine wines and fast dates!

Mingle over merlots and chardonnays as you sample both your drinks and your dates. If the thought of fruity flavours fusing together sets your taste buds tingling, Fast Life's Wine Lovers Speed Dating may be just your thing!

Wine Lover’s Speed dating kicks off with an entertaining and interactive introductory lesson on wine culture. These courses are designed to teach novice wine lovers the fundamentals of wine appreciation - so at the end of it you’ll be able to talk aromas, tastes and textures like a true wine connoisseur.

Then it’s on to the speed dating, with each date accompanied by a different wine or palate cleanser. Mix talk of tannins with flirtation, or let the wine become the backdrop as other textures develop...

The cost to attend a Wine Lovers’ Special Interest event is only $79 (the same price as our standard speed dating events) which includes a wine culture session with a qualified wine coach, gourmet cheese and crackers, 8 wine tastings, 12 dates and a $50 hair styling voucher!

Wine Tasting 101

Here a brief intro to wine appreciation. If you want to learn more and put it into practice, then why not register for the next Wine Lover’s Speed Dating event!

1. There are 4 families of wine: red, white, rose and champagne. When ordering wine at a restaurant, it’s best to stick to reds or whites because champagne is not generally considered a dinner drink, and rose is considered a “joke” in some wine circles! Anything that comes in a can, a box, or a forty ounce container isn't technically wine; it will be listed on the menu under the heading “This-Is-For-Cheapskates”!

2. The main difference between red and white wine is that the grape juice used to make red wine contains skins, seeds, and stems. As a general rule of thumb, red wines are heavier and more complex than white wines. White wines are usually a good place for beginners to start because they are initially more palatable to novices since they often tend to be sweeter.

3. The oldest rule in fine dining is that you should attempt to harmonize your choice of food and drink. (i.e. match your wine to the food) If you eating something delicate with subtle tastes, the ”Rule” states that you should avoid drinking a wine with a strong flavor that will overshadow the food. Conversely, a hearty meal will often be best complimented by a strong wine with flavour of its own. Now every single guide to wine in the world makes a point of saying that this “Rule” is way past it’s used by date and the only hard and fast dictate of wine drinking is to choose something you enjoy.

4. The simplest way to match your food to your wine is to remember that white wines tend to go best with fish and white meats, like chicken and pork; red wines go best with red meat and red sauces. Another adjutant to the Rule is that you should begin with lighter wines and progress to heavier ones throughout the course of the meal. This policy again reflects the idea that you should not overburden your palate: if you start with a strong drink, your taste buds will be shot and you won't be able to enjoy anything that comes after it. That is why aperitifs are typically light drinks while dessert liquids, like port, are rich and heavy.

So there you have the absolute basics of wine appreciation. If you want to learn more and put it into practice, whilst dating 12 guys or girls, keep your eyes peeled for the next Wine Lovers' event!
