Calgary, Alberta (January 24, 2007) - Fastlife, Canada’s most stylish speed dating service, and and online dating giant Lavalife, have found that size does matter, when it comes to a man’s height. FastLife has experienced an overwhelming demand from women for “Tall Men” speed dating events, where men above 6ft and women of any stature go on a series of mini-dates. This fact supports a study conducted by Polish anthropologist Dr Boguslaw Pawlowski showing that taller men perform better in the mating game. Calgary’s very first Tall Men event will take place on the most romantic day of the year, Valentine’s Day, ensuring that everyone in attendance will be in the mood for some super-sized love.
“Without doubt, this event will be a hit with the women. We’re always getting customer service emails from women who want to meet tall men. We thought it was high time we responded to their demands! And we couldn’t give these ladies a much better Valentine’s gift,” says FastLife founder Justin Parfitt.
Lavalife has likewise heard the call for height-enhanced men. “One of the popular search criteria for women is height. It certainly seems that tall men are in high demand.”, says Lori Miller, Spokesperson for Lavalife.
Demand for tall men events has come from women of all heights with a significant number of shorter women also indicating a preference for taller men. “Although I’m quite petite, I love dating tall men. They make me feel more feminine and are great for cleaning high places. It’s worth the sore neck.”, says speed dater Angie Chua (5’2”).
On average, women indicate that they’d like to meet a man at least 4 inches taller than themselves (a good sized stiletto heel). As the mean height of women in Canada is 5’5”, women on average are looking for men with an absolute minimum height of 5’9”, with many women indicating that they’d like to meet even taller men. The average Canadian male just clears the bar, measuring up at 5’11”.
This preference for vertically enhanced men is linked to the sub-conscious belief that taller men are more reproductively successful than their shorter counterparts. Height is seen as an indication that a man has good genes, is successful or comes from a wealthy background. Malcolm Gladwell’s study of male CEOs of Fortune 500 companies showed that the vast majority were above average male height.
However for men, height does not seem to be an important factor, as long as they are taller than the woman. For most men, a woman’s weight plays a larger role in their selection of partners.
Nevertheless, the news is not all bad for men of below average height. While women are initially more attracted to tall men, they are more likely to see short men as better companions to settle down with.
“For a short-term relationship, you want somebody you are sexually attracted to, they don't have to be the best to get on with. But for a long-term relationship, yes, you are having kids together, but you are also raising them and educating them. For that you want someone much more amenable, who has resources and who is kind and caring," says evolutionary psychologist Nick Neave of Northumbria University.
