Fast and Sweet

What do you think when you hear the term “speed dating”? Until recently, I was leery. To me, it was sort of like Internet dating - full of a list of unknowns and what ifs.

I learned something long ago; whenever I am curious about something and a pit of tension forms in my stomach, I must try it. That’s the only way I truly grow, by expanding beyond my comfort zone.

I recently had an experience that changed my preconceived notion about speed dating. I attended an event hosted by FastLife.ca (you may have heard of the adorable matchmaking couple, Justin and Annabelle Parfitt, who also star in the SLICE reality TV show Love Incorporated). They are the couple behind the magic of FastLife.

I won’t lie. As much as I was intrigued by the notion of speed dating, I was unsure about meeting more than 10 strangers in a period of 90 minutes, and actually being able to form an authentic opinion about compatibility. Alas, I’m always up for a new experience, and until "the one" comes along, it’s all practice.

Upon visiting the FastLife website, I was impressed by the brand, (yes, I’m a businesswoman) as well as the diverse selection and frequency of events. Upon speaking with founder Justin Parfitt (truth be told, I couldn’t deny his charming accent), I agreed to attend an event (but only with a girlfriend).

I was truly impressed by the event and actually had a lot of fun. I met guys that, normally, I probably wouldn't have the opportunity to converse with (and several of them were quite easy on the eyes). From a forensic scientist, to a documentary filmmaker, they were all there with a common purpose - to meet a woman they are attracted to and compatible with (and not have to waste weeks and months via virtual e-communication figuring it out). These events provide a structured environment that takes the many random variables out of the dating process (ie – how tall, old and attractive are you really?).

In many ways, the FastLife process is a fusion of online and speed dating. The group you’re with is prequalified – you choose to show up or not. Each person receives instructions to write down each others names, and at the end of your 8-minute conversation, check yes or no. If you both check yes then you will receive each others email addresses the next day. Simple. The rest is up to you.

Did I come out of this experience with my Mr. Right? Well, let’s say that remains to be seen *wink wink* (actually no, I didn’t). But, has this experience opened me up to taking more risks, and did it teach me some valuable lessons about myself? Absolutely. Will I do it again? Keep reading…
